Lyrics

(Source: Am I Not Your Girl?)

Nobody knew, not even you,
When I first started walking on wings.
But how long can a man hide
Or a woman ever hope to hide
Love that's locked up inside?
Ev'ry story worth the spinning
Must have been ginning.
Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me.
All too soon, my secret love
Became impatient to be free.
So I told a friendly star,
The way that dreamers often do,
Just how wonderful you are
And why I'm so in love with you.
Now I have to shout it
From the highest hills.
Even told the golden daffodils.
At last my heart's an open door,
And my secret love's no secret anymore.
Now I shout it
From the highest hills.
Even told the golden daffodils.
At last my heart's an open door,
And my secret love's no secret, my secret love's no secret, my secret love's no secret, anymore.

Notes

"Secret Love" was first, and most famously, recorded by Doris Day for the 1953 movie Calamity Jane. It won the 1953 Academy Award for Best Original Song, and went to #1 on the US Billboard chart in 1954. Sinéad probably used this version as her inspiration, and included Doris Day in her acknowledgements on Am I Not Your Girl?.

Nobody knew:

This stanza isn't in the Doris Day original or in Sinéad's cover, so I don't know why they are included in the lyrics on Am I Not Your Girl?.
